Sometimes, all you need is some time away from home and away from work to just sit in the sun and relax. Since beach holidays allow you to do just that, it’s not surprising that there are so many places around the world that cater for sunny and sandy getaways.

Whether you’re visiting a beach somewhere in the United States, the tropical shores of Madagascar or Mauritius or a gorgeous South-East Asian island, you’re bound to be in your happy place. You can spend all day baking in the sun, cooling off in the ocean and keeping refreshed with ice-cold beverages from the bar.

But what about when you’re in the mood to do something active? Luckily, beach activities and water sports have become increasingly popular over recent years, meaning that you’re likely to have a great variety of things to do while you’re at the beach.

Here are some of the best water sports to look out for when you’re picking your next holiday destination.

Surfing

It may be a simple one, but don’t underestimate how much fun surfing can be. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or have never even touched a board, surfing can be great fun for everyone.

Often, in busy areas where the swell is good and the beaches are relatively busy, you’ll be able to hire surfboards and even get a few lessons if you need them. One of the cool things about surfing is that once you get the hang of it, you can paddle out at first light, in the middle of the afternoon or even in the late afternoon to watch the sunset from the water.

If you find surfing a bit too challenging or the swell is a bit much for you, you can always try out a bodyboard. It’s easier to handle and can be just as much fun.

Wakeboarding

If you’re a little more into adrenaline-pumping activities, wakeboarding may be the thing for you. With your feet strapped into a board, you’ll hold onto a handle attached to a rope with a speed boat that’ll tow you around as you try and surf the wake behind the boat.

Once you’re up, it can be loads of fun, and it’s nothing short of exhilarating to be riding waves at a high speed.

Snorkelling

Slightly less extreme, snorkelling is a bit more about the scenery and enjoying the beauty of the ocean. Normally when you visit a place with good snorkelling, you should be able to find a place nearby that you can rent some equipment from. Alternatively, tropical islands that are used to having many tourists visiting often offer day trips for visitors. However, if it’s busy you may have to spend some time checking out the betting odds horse racing today or tomorrow offers while you wait your turn.

When you’re visiting a new place with beautiful scenery, it really would be a crime  not to appreciate your surroundings. Snorkelling allows you to do just that while also being active and getting a little bit of exercise in at the same time.
