Whether you’re lucky enough to enjoy a beach where you live or if you’re taking some time off near the sea when you’re on holiday, there are some things you always need to bear in mind when you take a trip to the beach. Hanging out at the beach is always fun, but safety ought to be your number one priority – especially if you have children!

The good news is that if you’re aware of what to do beforehand and how to keep yourself and your family safe and protected, you’re sure to have an awesome time.

So here are some things to remember when you go to the beach.

  1. Swim in the Designated Areas

The seaside may be pretty, but don’t let it fool you – the ocean is incredibly dangerous and it demands your respect. Not only are there dangerous animals like sharks, the currents and tides are tricky and can be fatal. Whether you’re an amateur or strong swimmer, always make sure that you’re swimming in the designated area when you’re at the beach – especially a busy one. These areas are normally very clearly marked with flags, but if you’re not sure, just ask the nearest lifeguard you see.

The reason for these flags is that the lifeguards have carefully surveyed the beach and checked to find the safest place for bathers to enjoy the water. If you risk swimming elsewhere, you may find yourself vulnerable to rip tides and other dangers.

  1. Stay Hydrated

Drinking water may not be something you think of when you go to the beach, but it should be! When you’re spending all day in the sun, you better make sure you keep hydrated or you’ll end up sick at the end of the day.

  1. Respect the Environment

Make sure that you always go home with exactly what you arrived with – all your belongings and any litter and rubbish you may have created. Only leave your footprints!

  1. Sunscreen

First and foremost, make sure that you protect your skin. No matter your complexion, using sunscreen, wearing a hat and just generally covering up when you’re outside for longer periods of time is absolutely essential. If you don’t, you’ll be paying for it when you get older. So, one thing you always need to have with you when you go to the beach is sunscreen.

If you’re properly protected, you can sit back, relax and do whatever it is that you enjoy – whether it’s reading a book or playing some Canadian slots online on your smartphone or tablet.

  1. Stay Alert and Be Aware

This is true no matter where you are, but always make sure you’re aware of your surroundings when you’re at the beach. Keep a close eye on your children at all times and avoid leaving your belongings lying around on the sand if you can help it. It’s unfortunate, but you never know when there may be somebody around that’s up to no good.
